Abstract:

This is a review on the history of Urban Planning International (UPI), at the time of its 40th anniversary. The paper reflects and summarizes the primary missions and goals of UPI, as well as its efforts on the content creation and organizational development over the last 40 years. UPI has become one of the most influential academic journals in the Chinese urban planning field, and it has been recognized as an irreplaceable reading material among Chinese planning researchers and practitioners. As the only Chinese professional platform that has been particularly supporting the knowledge exchange on international urban planning theories, policies, and technologies, UPI has profoundly contributed to the advancement of China’s urban and regional planning field, dating back to China’s reforms and opening-up. With an expectation to inspire the sustainable growth of UPI and all the other journals, the paper is ended by reviewing some crucial lessons and experiences that UPI has cumulated from its daily works throughout its history, especially in the last decade.
