Abstract:

The first-tier cities in China, like Beijing and Shanghai, are currently in the crucial period of “building global city, improving international culture influence”. Turning cultural influence from internal-oriented to exportoriented is the significant cultural strategy for the development of Chinese cities in the future. In this study, we build a global urban culture network based on the perspective of multinational media, adopting the data of multinational television media and the method of urban network analysis. In the analysis, it is shown that the external cultural influence of Chinese cities, considering both its ‘breadth’ and ‘depth’, is still far less than the top cities around the world. Knowing that “comprehensive national power is the fundamental determinant of cultural influence” and based on experience from top cities, this paper suggests further development in three dimensions, which include selective development in cultural realm, hierarchical development in international and regional programs, and spatial location of media industry.
