Near-natural Restoration Track and Revelation of Han River Basin in Seoul, the Republic of Korea

Abstract:

Near-natural restoration is an effective path for urban river management and ecological restoration at present. This paper compares the planning and strategies of near-natural restoration in the Han River basin in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, over the past 30 years, and summarizes the representative practices and initiatives in the three phases of exploration, improvement, and perfection. It finds that near-natural restoration of urban rivers in the Republic of Korea has advanced in the direction of synergy among the natural ecological, socio-economic, historical-humanistic and urban spatial domains. On this basis, this paper provides an in-depth analysis of the main restoration efforts with the “Basic Plan for the Natural Restoration of the Han River 2030” in the third phase, the perfection phase, which includes the construction of the ecosystem, the rectification of tributaries and the restoration strategies of key projects, etc., to provide reference for the near-natural restoration of urban rivers in China from four aspects: general thinking, basin-scale ecosystem, integrated management of water environment and participatory governance of residents.
