Abstract:

Europe and North America are the main arenas of current gentrification research. Basically, the evolution of gentrification theory is consistent with the development of urban studies in Europe and North America, tracing from Urban Chicago School to the Marxist, and then to the multiple research perspectives. It indicates that gentrification is inclusively embedded into reconstruction process of urban space. With the growing popularity of comparative urbanism, the universality of gentrification has caused a lot of controversies. By means of visualization software and literature review, this paper analyzes 1 716 documents from the Web of Science database, and shows the evolution, consensus and debates of gentrification research in the past 15 years. Compared with the developed economies, China points to a completely different trajectory to gentrification, in terms of government and market role, public participation, national dominance, and land ownership. This paper helps to understand gentrification mechanism of China and to avoid its negative effects during its economic transformation, which is important for providing impetus for a new round of urbanization.
